The BFF Notebook
an original musical by Amy Azzara & Bridget Welch
A look back at a childhood filled with creativity and warm moments, The BFF Notebook unpacks lifelong friendship and growing up -- together. Bridget and Amy journaled their thoughts, plans, and dreams to each other in their "BFF Notebook." Words from their most formative years, and a friendship built on a lifetime of context; life shared and spoken and life never discussed, only written and read. Girls destined to "make something" together, unaware that they were "making" just that all along.
We grew up trading a shared journal, called "The BFF Notebook." In what is currently a two-person musical, we use direct journal entries in our book and explore unwritten thoughts in the songs.
Our story starts when we are kids in the summer of 2009 where we establish our love of playing, fairies, the sky, and imagination. We continue to the school year and the confusion, joy, and pain of growing up among peers and finding the truth to who you are. The entries and songs explore finding a sense of self in the context of someone who has known you your whole life.
Eventually we are in present day in the songs, as we sing about the vulnerability of following dreams and how much harder it becomes as we grow up and feel further away from the safety of childhood freedom and community.
Our hope is that audiences can look back on their own childhood and feel inspired to be creative and brave. The songs and themes move to a more existential place, as we grow up through the musical.
